Svetlogorsk became the first Russian city to be admitted to the Cittaslow Association of Cities.
In response to the city's application for membership, the Association provided a list of requirements that Svetlogorsk had to meet.
The city submitted information that was assessed by the Association. The Association's certificate confirms that Svetlogorsk complies with the philosophy of the Cittaslow movement.
The administration of the Svetlogorsk Urban District received the certificate of admission to the Association in early 2020.

Cittaslow (Italian for "Slow City") is an international movement founded in Italy in 1999. At the time Svetlogorsk joined the Association, the community included almost 240 cities around the world.
The principles of the community are to improve quality of life by slowing down the pace, enjoying the uniqueness of each city, and resisting uniformity and standardisation.
Cities in the Association support local cuisine, the creation of new green and pedestrian areas, clean technologies and the production of handmade goods, while fostering an atmosphere of good neighbourliness and hospitality.
In Svetlogorsk, one of the priority areas of urban development is creating a comfortable urban environment and preserving the city's green spaces. Public areas are therefore continuously being improved.
Membership in the Association means that the city will continue to follow the policies of the Cittaslow community: continue implementing its energy-saving programme, support local entrepreneurs and producers, and welcome guests to events of various themes and formats, information about which is already available on Svetlogorsk's dedicated page on the Association's website.
